I'm sure you'll love the 40D.  We have a 20D and it's been fantastic.  Curious what lenses you have.  I'm looking at getting a Tameron 18-200 or 18-250 or a Cannon EF 28-135 ISM.  The Cannon stock 18-55 leaves a little to be desired in terms of zoom, speed and crispness.
We let Andrew use our point and shoot, but not the 20D.  Not without my hands on it too....
